How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 3rd grade unit on time, mass and liquid volume, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand the tickets out in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ticket 11.8 (ounces, pounds, cups and gallons) is for Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia, ticket 11.9 (reading a thermometer) for Florida, Indiana and Oklahoma, and ticket 11.10 (the tool and the unit, and an estimate) for Florida, Georgia and Virginia. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read the clock at odd times like 4:37, and find grams, kilograms, milliliters and liters on food labels in the kitchen.

Tips for Success

  • On a number line, jump to the next quarter hour first, then by 15s
  • Count the ticks between two numbers before reading a scale or a beaker
  • A paper clip is about 1 gram; a liter bottle of water is about 1 kilogram
  • Read the whole story before choosing to add, subtract, multiply or divide
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.MD.C.7 Read and record clock times in 5-minute steps on clock faces and digital displays, and use a.m. and p.m. correctly.
  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
