How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 3rd grade unit on time, mass and liquid volume, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 11.8 to 11.10 (customary units, temperature, and choosing the tool and the unit) are taught in 3rd grade in some states, such as Virginia; skip them if yours teaches them in another grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. A kitchen clock, a kitchen scale and a measuring jug work as well as classroom ones. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep a geared clock or the Teaching Clock out for every time lesson
  • Ask "what is each tick worth?" before reading any scale, jug or thermometer
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.MD.C.7 Read and record clock times in 5-minute steps on clock faces and digital displays, and use a.m. and p.m. correctly.
  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
