Five pages on reading clocks to the minute. Page 1 has five big clocks with the minutes printed round the rim: students count by 5s to the last five, count on by 1s, and write the time. Page 2 has twelve clocks to read and write on digital clocks; page 3 turns it around with twelve digital times to draw. On page 4 each row has a digital time and three clocks; one is right, one is 5 minutes off and, near the end of an hour, one shows the next hour, the most common mistake (the hour hand is almost at the next number). Page 5 has six everyday times to write, with a.m. or p.m. to circle.
Use a teaching clock to count round together: by 5s from the 12 to the last number the minute hand passed, then on by 1s, tick by tick. Before page 4, set a clock to 3:55 and ask why the hour hand points almost at the 4 when the time is still 3 something.
Read the clock to the minute together a few times a day, like 7:08 at breakfast or 4:46 after school. Ask your child to say each time and whether it is a.m. or p.m.
