Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same order as the test
  • Count tens to multiply by a multiple of 10, and find missing factors with tens
  • Solve equal groups, array and measurement stories with the unknown in any place
  • Solve two-step stories, with an equation for each step or one equation with a letter
  • Round to the nearest hundred to decide whether an answer is reasonable
  • The last three questions (an area model for 2-digit times 1-digit, times as many, and true or false equations with × and ÷) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Multiply by multiples of 10 (4 × 70)
  • Missing factors with tens
  • Equal groups and array stories
  • Measurement stories with × and ÷
  • Two-step stories with all four operations
  • An equation with a letter for the unknown
  • Estimate to check: is the answer reasonable?

  • Times as many
  • True or false equations with × and ÷

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on word problems and multiplying by tens, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers; question 1 counts tens in rods where the test gives the facts alone. Questions 10 to 12 are the state questions, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, reading the stories aloud. For most stories students write an equation with a ? for the unknown, with the sign in the circle, and the answer with its unit. The keys show one equation for each story; any equation that fits is right (28 ÷ 4 = ? as well as ? × 4 = 28, and any letter for the unknown). The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each story together and ask your child what the question is before they solve it: how many in all, how many in each group, or how many groups?

Tips for Success

  • Ask students to say what the ? stands for before they solve
  • For 4 × 70, think 4 × 7 tens: 28 tens is 280
  • In a two-step story, the answer to step 1 is a number in step 2
  • Round both numbers to the nearest hundred to check a sum or difference
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.3 Solve story problems about equal groups, arrays and measurements by multiplying or dividing within 100, using drawings and equations.
  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
  • 3.NBT.A.3 Multiply a single-digit number by a multiple of ten from 10 to 90, such as 4 × 70, using place value and properties.
  • 4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (24 = 3 × 8: 24 is 3 times as many as 8) and write comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, and two-digit by two-digit numbers, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.

3rd Grade Word Problems Unit Review

A review of the unit on word problems and multiplying by tens, to go over together the day before the test. Students multiply by multiples of 10, write equations with a ? or a letter for the unknown, solve one-step and two-step stories with all four operations and estimate to check an answer.
