Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on word problems and multiplying by tens, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, most of them story problems with an equation and the answer with its label, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.
Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The keys show one equation for each story; any equation that fits the story is right (24 ÷ 4 = ? or 4 × ? = 24), and any letter will do for the unknown. Tickets 7.8 to 7.10 are for the states that teach those lessons in 3rd grade; skip the ones your class does not learn. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.
Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing story problems together. Ask your child what the question is asking before they solve it: how many in all, how many in each group, or how many groups?
