Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 4th grade unit on adding and subtracting fractions, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.
Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. On ticket 8.2 any two different ways that add up are right. Ticket 8.7 starts with 4 − 2 2/3: watch for students who trade 1 whole for thirds. Ticket 8.8 ends with a sum in simplest form, Virginia's part of the lesson; any class can do it by dividing, as in lesson 7.3. The unit test is a separate pack.
Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to show 3 1/4 − 1 2/4 with paper strips cut into fourths.
