Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Sums of unit fractions both ways, and a fraction broken apart two ways
  • Add the parts of a strip, and subtract with a jump on a number line
  • Rename fractions greater than 1 and mixed numbers
  • Add mixed numbers, and subtract a mixed number from a whole number

Skills Covered

  • A fraction as a sum of unit fractions
  • Break a fraction apart in more than one way
  • Add fractions with the same denominator
  • Subtract fractions with the same denominator

  • Use benchmarks to check an answer
  • Fraction story problems with equations

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on adding and subtracting fractions, to do together the day before the test. Its 11 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other fractions; where the test adds and subtracts with equations, the review adds the parts of a strip, subtracts with a jump on a number line and takes a mixed number from a whole number. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. On question 3 any two different ways that add up are right; the key shows one. Question 8's 3 − 1 1/4 needs 1 whole traded for fourths first: a good one to talk through. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain why 1/2 + 1/2 cannot be 2/4.

Tips for Success

  • Add or subtract the numerators; the denominator stays the same
  • Add mixed numbers whole numbers and parts apart
  • Trade 1 whole for parts when there are not enough parts to take away
  • Ask "Is the answer more or less than 1?" before writing it
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3b Break a fraction apart into same-denominator fractions in different ways, like 5/6 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 1/6 + 4/6, and write the equations.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.NF.B.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of 1/b, such as 7/3 = 7 × (1/3), and show it with a fraction model.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.

4th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit Review

A review of the unit on adding and subtracting fractions, to go over together the day before the test. Students write sums of unit fractions, add on a strip, subtract with a jump on a number line, rename and add and subtract mixed numbers, check answers and solve story problems.
