Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different fractions
  • Write a fraction as a sum of unit fractions, and break a fraction apart two ways
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and take a fraction from 1
  • Rename fractions greater than 1 as mixed numbers and back
  • Add mixed numbers and subtract them, trading 1 whole where needed
  • Use benchmarks to tell if an answer makes sense, and solve two story problems with an equation
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • A fraction as a sum of unit fractions

  • Add fractions with the same denominator
  • Subtract fractions with the same denominator
  • Rename mixed numbers and fractions greater than 1
  • Add mixed numbers
  • Subtract mixed numbers, trading 1 whole
  • Use benchmarks to check an answer
  • Fraction story problems with equations

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on adding and subtracting fractions. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different fractions, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Every fraction has a like denominator (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12), and every answer falls in simplest form as it is worked. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Question 2 asks for two different ways to break a fraction apart: any two different ways that add up are right. Question 8 gives two answers someone found: the wrong one is off by at least one half, so a student who checks it against one half or 1 will catch it. The story problems ask for an equation and the answer with its unit. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to add 1 3/4 + 2 2/4 out loud: the wholes, then the fourths, then the extra whole the fourths make.

Tips for Success

  • Add or subtract the numerators; the denominator names the parts and stays the same
  • Add mixed numbers whole numbers and parts apart, then trade 4 fourths for 1 whole
  • When there are not enough parts to take away, trade 1 whole for parts first
  • Ask "Is the answer more or less than 1?" before writing it
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3b Break a fraction apart into same-denominator fractions in different ways, like 5/6 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 1/6 + 4/6, and write the equations.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.NF.B.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of 1/b, such as 7/3 = 7 × (1/3), and show it with a fraction model.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.

4th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions Test

The unit test on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, in two forms. Students break fractions into unit fractions and other parts, add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, rename fractions greater than 1, check answers with benchmarks and solve story problems.
