How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding and subtracting fractions, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the fractions the unit builds on: naming shaded fractions, counting the unit fractions in a fraction (5/6 is 5 pieces of 1/6), points on number lines from 0 to 1 and from 0 to 2, fractions equal to whole numbers, and whether a fraction is more or less than one half. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who cannot count the unit fractions in 5/6 needs fraction strips for the first lessons of the unit; one who misses the number line past 1 or the whole numbers as fractions will need more time on mixed numbers in lesson 8.5. The one half question leads into checking answers with benchmarks in lesson 8.8.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: fold a paper strip into sixths and ask how many sixths make the whole strip.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep fraction strips handy for students who missed the unit fractions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.

4th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on adding and subtracting fractions, on the fractions it builds on. Students name shaded fractions and points on number lines past 1, count unit fractions, write whole numbers as fractions and compare fractions with one half.
