How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on multiplying a fraction by a whole number, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: counting the unit fractions in a fraction, a point on a number line past 1, adding the same fraction three times, multiplication facts, a fraction greater than 1 as a mixed number (from the last unit) and one thing shared equally. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. Adding 2/5 three times is the heart of the unit (3 × 2/5): a student who gets it is ready; one who adds the denominators too needs fraction strips again. A student who cannot write 11/4 as a mixed number will need help with the stories, whose answers are mixed numbers. The sharing question leads into the state lesson at the end of the unit.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: ask what 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 makes, and how many fourths make 1 whole.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Watch for students who add the denominators
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.

4th Grade Multiplying Fractions Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on multiplying a fraction by a whole number, on the fractions and facts it builds on. Students count unit fractions, name a point past 1, add the same fraction again, multiply facts, write a mixed number and share one thing equally.
