  • Missing factors
  • Common multiples

How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade fractions and the facts the unit builds on: naming a shaded fraction and a point on a number line, comparing fractions with the same denominator or the same numerator, missing factors (4 × ? = 12) and a number two rows of multiples share. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who misses the missing factors will need the multiplication facts close by for the lessons on multiplying and dividing to find equal fractions; one who misses the multiples will need help finding a common denominator in lesson 7.4. A student who misses the comparisons needs fraction strips before the unit's comparing lessons.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: practise the times tables to 12, and ask which is more, 3/8 or 5/8 of the same pizza.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep the multiplication facts handy for students who missed the factors
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
  • 4.OA.B.4 For numbers 1 to 100, list factor pairs, spot multiples of one-digit numbers, and sort numbers into prime and composite.

4th Grade Equivalent and Comparing Fractions Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, on the 3rd grade fractions and facts it builds on. Students name shaded fractions and points on a number line, compare fractions with the same denominator or numerator, and find missing factors and common multiples.
