How to Use This Pack

Seven exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on area and perimeter, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 12.5, 12.6 and 12.7 are for the states that teach them in 4th grade; skip them if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child whether each answer is an area or a perimeter, and to say its unit.

Tips for Success

  • Have students write the formula before putting in the numbers
  • Ask "covering or going around?" before each story
  • Label every answer with its unit, square units for area
  • Let students split shapes made of rectangles in more than one way
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.MD.C.3a Know that a unit cube, with edges 1 unit long, has a volume of one cubic unit and is the unit for measuring volume.
  • 5.MD.C.3b Know that a solid exactly filled by some number of unit cubes, with no gaps or overlapping, has that many cubic units of volume.
  • 5.MD.C.4 Find a volume by counting how many unit cubes fill it, in cubic centimeters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 5.MD.C.5a Pack a rectangular prism with unit cubes and check that the cube count equals length × width × height, or base area × height.
  • 5.MD.C.5b Use the two volume formulas for rectangular prisms (length × width × height, and base area × height) in real and math problems.
  • 5.MD.C.5c Find the volume of a solid made of two rectangular prisms that do not overlap by adding their volumes, including in real problems.
