Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Use the area and perimeter formulas for a rectangle and a square
  • Find the area and perimeter of rectangles with two-digit sides, in a sketch and in a table
  • Find a missing side from the area and from the perimeter
  • Solve an area story and a perimeter story
  • The last four questions (rectangles with the same perimeter, shapes made of rectangles, and volume with unit cubes) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • The area formula: length × width
  • The perimeter formula: 2 × length + 2 × width
  • Area and perimeter of a square
  • Two-digit side lengths
  • A missing side from the area or the perimeter
  • Area and perimeter stories
  • Same perimeter, different area
  • Shapes made of two rectangles
  • Volume with unit cubes

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on area and perimeter. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 8 are the Common Core part of the unit; questions 9 to 12 (rectangles with the same perimeter, shapes made of rectangles, and volume with unit cubes) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Most questions have two parts, an area and a perimeter: give the point when both are right, or score them by the part if you like. Students need scratch paper or the space on the page for the two-digit products. Questions 9 to 12 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: give the ones your class learns and score out of what you give. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to find the area and the perimeter of a table or a rug at home, and to say which one tells how much covers it and which tells the distance around.

Tips for Success

  • Ask "covering or going around?" before each story: area or perimeter
  • Have students write the formula before putting in the numbers
  • Label every answer with its unit: square units for area
  • For a missing side, ask what number times the side makes the area
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.MD.C.3a Know that a unit cube, with edges 1 unit long, has a volume of one cubic unit and is the unit for measuring volume.
  • 5.MD.C.3b Know that a solid exactly filled by some number of unit cubes, with no gaps or overlapping, has that many cubic units of volume.
  • 5.MD.C.4 Find a volume by counting how many unit cubes fill it, in cubic centimeters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 5.MD.C.5a Pack a rectangular prism with unit cubes and check that the cube count equals length × width × height, or base area × height.
  • 5.MD.C.5b Use the two volume formulas for rectangular prisms (length × width × height, and base area × height) in real and math problems.
  • 5.MD.C.5c Find the volume of a solid made of two rectangular prisms that do not overlap by adding their volumes, including in real problems.

4th Grade Area and Perimeter Test

The unit test on area and perimeter in two forms, from the formulas for rectangles to two-digit side lengths and stories. Students use the formulas, find a missing side from the area or the perimeter, solve area and perimeter stories, and work with shapes made of rectangles and boxes of unit cubes.
