Features

  • The goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready and the words to use
  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers and quiz for that lesson
  • Lessons: the area and perimeter formulas, two-digit side lengths, a missing side from the area or the perimeter, and area and perimeter stories
  • Lessons 12.5 to 12.7 (the same perimeter or area, shapes made of rectangles, and volume with unit cubes) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade

4th Grade Math CurriculumUnit 12

These are the lesson plans for Unit 12 of 15 in the 4th Grade Math Curriculum: 127 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

12.1 Area and perimeter formulas

12.2 Larger side lengths

12.3 Find an unknown side

12.4 Area and perimeter stories

12.5 Same perimeter or same area ★

12.6 Shapes made of rectangles ★

12.7 Volume with unit cubes ★

★ Taught in 4th grade in some states.

Skills Covered

  • Area: A = l × w; perimeter: P = 2 × l + 2 × w
  • A square: A = s × s and P = 4 × s
  • Two-digit side lengths, split at the tens
  • A missing side from the area or the perimeter
  • Area or perimeter? Story problems
  • Same perimeter, different areas (and the reverse)
  • Shapes made of rectangles
  • Volume: unit cubes in layers

How to Use This Pack

Seven lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on area and perimeter, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the seven lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Keep grid paper and square tiles out all unit. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other rectangles than they do. Lessons 12.5 to 12.7 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: rectangles with the same perimeter or the same area (Florida, Virginia), shapes made of rectangles (Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma) and volume with unit cubes (Oklahoma); skip the ones your class does not learn.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Graph paper, a ruler, toothpicks and sugar cubes or building blocks are all you need. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Ask "does it cover the shape or go around it?" before every problem
  • Say the unit every time: square feet for an area, feet for a perimeter
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.MD.C.3a Know that a unit cube, with edges 1 unit long, has a volume of one cubic unit and is the unit for measuring volume.
  • 5.MD.C.3b Know that a solid exactly filled by some number of unit cubes, with no gaps or overlapping, has that many cubic units of volume.
  • 5.MD.C.4 Find a volume by counting how many unit cubes fill it, in cubic centimeters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 5.MD.C.5a Pack a rectangular prism with unit cubes and check that the cube count equals length × width × height, or base area × height.
  • 5.MD.C.5b Use the two volume formulas for rectangular prisms (length × width × height, and base area × height) in real and math problems.
  • 5.MD.C.5c Find the volume of a solid made of two rectangular prisms that do not overlap by adding their volumes, including in real problems.
