  • Two-digit times one-digit

How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on area and perimeter, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade area and perimeter and the multiplying and dividing the unit builds on: counting square units, rows times squares in a row, adding the sides of a rectangle, a perimeter on grid paper, missing factors and two-digit times one-digit products. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who mixes up area and perimeter needs grid paper and square tiles before the formulas, and one who misses the facts needs them before finding a missing side. Nothing on the page uses the formulas yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: cover a small book with sticky notes to count its area, and run a string around it for its perimeter.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep square tiles and grid paper out for a student who mixes up area and perimeter
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.

4th Grade Area and Perimeter Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on area and perimeter, on the 3rd grade area and perimeter and the multiplying and dividing it builds on. Students count square units, multiply rows by squares in a row, add sides, find a perimeter on a grid, and find missing factors and products.
