Five pages on the area and perimeter formulas, with side lengths too big for the times tables. Page 1 starts with the formulas on a card, then has five rectangles and squares with a two-digit side and a one-digit side: students write the formulas with the numbers in and use the work space to multiply. Page 2 has rectangles with two two-digit sides, each split at the tens like an area model: students find the four parts, add them for the area, and find the perimeter. Page 3 gives the area and one side: divide to find the missing side, then multiply to check. Page 4 gives the perimeter and one side: half the perimeter is one length and one width, so subtract the side you know; a square's side is the perimeter divided by 4. A table then mixes all four measures. Page 5 has six stories about gardens, rugs, rooms, posters and pens: students circle area or perimeter, write an equation and answer with the unit. The first problem on each page is worked as an example.
Before page 1, have students measure the classroom door or a desk top in centimeters and find both measures, then ask which formula fits each job: a border around the desk, or paper to cover it. On page 4, ask why half the perimeter is one length plus one width, and draw it.
Measure a rug, a table or a garden bed with your child in feet or inches and find how much would go around it and how much would cover it. Then give a total, "the fence is 60 feet and the pen is 18 feet long", and ask how wide it must be.

The area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and squares, used with side lengths past the times tables. Students write A = l × w and P = 2 × l + 2 × w with the numbers in, split rectangles to multiply, work back from the area or the perimeter to a missing side, and decide whether a story needs the area or the perimeter.
