Features

  • The goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready and the words to use
  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet maker, tool and quizzes for that lesson
  • Lessons: rectangles with fraction and decimal sides, shapes made of rectangles, right triangles as half a rectangle, parallelograms and any triangle, trapezoids and stories in the right units, and estimated perimeters
  • Every lesson is for the states that teach area and perimeter past rectangles in 5th grade

5th Grade Math CurriculumUnit 13

These are the lesson plans for Unit 13 of 16 in the 5th Grade Math Curriculum: 127 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

13.1 Fraction and decimal side lengths

13.2 Shapes made of rectangles

13.3 Area of right triangles

13.4 Parallelograms and triangles

13.5 Trapezoids and stories

13.6 Estimate perimeters

Skills Covered

  • Rectangles with fraction and decimal sides
  • Shapes made of two rectangles; missing sides
  • A right triangle is half a rectangle
  • Parallelograms: base times height
  • Any triangle: half of base times height
  • Trapezoids, and stories in the right units
  • Estimating perimeters, curved ones too

How to Use This Pack

Six lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on the area and perimeter of polygons, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the six lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, maker, tool and quizzes for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Keep grid paper, rulers, scissors and string out all unit: students see why the formulas work by cutting shapes apart and moving the pieces. Every lesson in this unit comes from state standards: rectangles with fraction and decimal sides (Florida), shapes made of rectangles (South Carolina), the area of right triangles (Indiana, Virginia), parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids (Indiana) and estimating perimeters (Oklahoma); teach the ones your class learns. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other shapes and numbers than they do.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. A ruler, grid paper, scissors and a piece of string are all you need: cut paper shapes apart and fit them back together, and wrap string around round lids. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Ask "around or covered?" before every answer: units or square units
  • Find the height at a square corner before multiplying: a slanted side is never the height
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.
  • 5.NF.B.5a Without multiplying, tell how the size of a product compares to one factor by looking at the size of the other factor.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.
  • 5.NF.B.6 Solve real-life problems that multiply fractions and mixed numbers, using fraction models or equations.
