  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet maker and quizzes for that lesson
  • Lessons: polygons, classifying triangles, classifying quadrilaterals, the properties of shape groups, the quadrilateral hierarchy, measuring and sorting angles, the angles of a triangle and circles
  • Lessons 12.6, 12.7 and 12.8 (measuring and sorting angles, the angles of a triangle, circles) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade

5th Grade Math CurriculumUnit 12

These are the lesson plans for Unit 12 of 16 in the 5th Grade Math Curriculum: 127 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

12.1 Polygons

12.2 Classify triangles

12.3 Classify quadrilaterals

12.4 Properties of shape groups

12.5 The quadrilateral hierarchy

12.6 Measure and sort angles ★

12.7 Angles of a triangle ★

12.8 Circles ★

★ Taught in 5th grade in some states.

Skills Covered

  • Sort polygons by sides, right angles and parallel sides
  • Tell regular polygons from the rest
  • Name triangles by their sides and by their angles
  • Give every name that fits a quadrilateral
  • See the properties a shape gets from its group
  • Arrange quadrilaterals in a hierarchy: always, sometimes or never
  • Measure and sort angles; the angles of a triangle make 180 degrees
  • The center, radius and diameter of a circle

How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on classifying shapes and angles, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, maker and quizzes for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Keep shape cards, dot paper and index cards (for checking right angles) out all unit, and mark equal sides, parallel sides and right angles every time. The plans use the definition of a trapezoid the worksheets use, at least one pair of parallel sides, and say that some books use exactly one. Lessons 12.6 to 12.8 are taught in 5th grade in some states only: measuring and sorting angles (Oklahoma and Virginia), the angles of a triangle (Virginia) and circles (Indiana); skip the ones your class does not learn. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other shapes, angles and lengths than they do.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Hunt for shapes around the house and name them every way you can, fold paper squares and rectangles, tear the corners off a paper triangle, and measure across lids and plates. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Have students test every name on a chart, not just the best name
  • Say "always" only when no shape breaks the statement
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.C.5a Know an angle's size is the share of a circle (centered at its vertex) between its rays; one degree is 1/360 of a full turn.
  • 4.MD.C.5b Know that an angle made of some number of one-degree turns measures that many degrees, so 50 one-degree turns make 50°.
  • 4.MD.C.6 Use a protractor to find the size of an angle to the nearest whole degree, and draw angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.C.7 Know that angle measures add up when an angle is split into parts, and find unknown angles in diagrams by adding or subtracting, using equations.
  • 4.G.A.1 Draw and find points, lines, line segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines, including in flat shapes.
  • 4.G.A.2 Sort flat shapes by whether they have parallel or perpendicular lines or angles of a certain size, and recognize right triangles as a group.
  • 5.G.B.3 Know that a shape in a smaller group has every feature of the larger group: squares are rhombuses, so all squares have four equal sides.
  • 5.G.B.4 Sort flat shapes into a hierarchy by their properties, such as polygons, quadrilaterals, parallelograms, rectangles and squares.
