How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on the area and perimeter of polygons, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: adding mixed numbers and a whole number times a fraction (for fraction side lengths), the area and perimeter of a rectangle, half of a rectangle on a grid (for right triangles), two-digit products (for the formulas), units or square units (for the stories) and the perimeter of a polygon from its sides (for estimating perimeters). It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who cannot find the area and perimeter of a rectangle needs that before shapes made of rectangles; one who calls a perimeter square feet needs the "covering or going around?" talk before the stories. The half rectangle leads into the lesson where a right triangle is half a rectangle.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: ask how much fence goes around a garden 7 m by 4 m, and how much ground it covers.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Watch for students who mix up area and perimeter
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.
  • 5.NBT.B.5 Multiply whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.

5th Grade Area and Perimeter Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on the area and perimeter of polygons, on the fractions, area and perimeter and multiplying it builds on. Students add mixed numbers, measure a rectangle, find half of a rectangle, multiply two-digit numbers, pick units or square units and add the sides of a polygon.
