Features

  • The goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready and the words to use
  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet maker, tool and quiz levels for that lesson
  • Lessons: the coordinate plane, plotting points, joining points and lengths on the grid, points that tell a story, two patterns from two rules, graphing the pairs, input-output tables, adding or multiplying patterns, and patterns with fractions and decimals
  • Lessons 14.7, 14.8 and 14.9 (input-output tables, add or multiply, patterns with fractions and decimals) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade

5th Grade Math CurriculumUnit 14

These are the lesson plans for Unit 14 of 16 in the 5th Grade Math Curriculum: 127 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

14.1 The coordinate plane

14.2 Plot points

14.3 Join points; lengths on the grid

14.4 Points that tell a story

14.5 Two patterns from two rules

14.6 Graph the pairs of two patterns

14.7 Input-output tables ★

14.8 Add or multiply? ★

14.9 Patterns with fractions and decimals ★

★ Taught in 5th grade in some states.

Skills Covered

  • Name the axes and the origin; read ordered pairs
  • Plot points and say how far to go along each axis
  • Join points and find lengths along grid lines
  • Tell what a point means on a map or a graph
  • Make two patterns from two rules and compare their terms
  • Graph the pairs of two patterns and find the next pair
  • Find the rule of an input-output table and write it with n
  • Tell adding patterns from multiplying ones
  • Extend patterns with fractions and decimals

How to Use This Pack

Nine lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on the coordinate plane and patterns, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the nine lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, maker, tool and quiz levels for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. A floor grid of masking tape makes "across, then up" something students walk, and coordinate grid paper stays out all unit. Lessons 14.7 to 14.9 are taught in 5th grade in some states only: input-output tables written with n (Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia), telling adding patterns from multiplying ones (Texas) and patterns with fractions and decimals (Virginia); skip the ones your class does not learn. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other points, patterns and rules than they do.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Draw a map of your street or a room on grid paper, play a game of finding points across and then up, and make two counting patterns side by side. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Say "across, then up" every time a point is read or plotted
  • Have students test a rule on every pair, not just the first
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, find how matching terms relate, form ordered pairs from them, and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.
  • 5.G.A.1 Know a coordinate grid is two perpendicular number lines meeting at the origin, and an ordered pair gives the distance along each axis.
  • 5.G.A.2 Graph points in the first quadrant to show real and math problems, and explain what the coordinates of each point mean in the situation.
