Skills Covered

  • Name the origin, the x-axis, and the y-axis
  • Read and write the ordered pair of a point
  • Plot and label points from ordered pairs, including points on the axes
  • Make two number patterns from two rules and graph the ordered pairs
  • Tell an add rule (y = x + 3) from a multiply rule (y = 3 × x)
  • Use coordinates on a map and say what a point on a graph means

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on the first quadrant of the coordinate plane. Page 1 names the origin, the x-axis, and the y-axis with a word bank, asks what the origin is, how the axes meet, and how to plot a point step by step, then has students write the ordered pair of ten lettered points, two of them on the axes and two whose numbers swap places. Page 2 has ten points to plot and label from their ordered pairs, then short questions about how far to go along each axis, including moving from one point to another. Page 3 is a mystery picture: plot the points of each part in order, join them with a ruler, and say what the picture is. Page 4 makes two number patterns from two rules, fills a table and the ordered pairs, graphs them, and says how each y term is related to its x term (one pattern adds, one multiplies); then students look at four tables and write an add rule or a multiply rule for each. Page 5 uses a town map to find places and count blocks between them, and a graph of a hike to say what each point means.

In the Classroom

Tape a large grid on the floor and let students walk to a point: across first, then up. Ask what goes wrong when someone walks (3, 5) up first. Before page 4, build the two patterns as two rows on the board and ask how each bottom number is related to the one above it.

At Home

Draw a small grid on paper and play a guessing game: hide a "treasure" at a point and give clues like "go 4 across and 2 up". Then switch, and let your child hide the treasure and write the ordered pair.

Tips for Success

  • Always start at the origin, (0, 0)
  • The first number tells how far to go across; the second tells how far to go up
  • (3, 5) and (5, 3) are different points
  • A point with a 0 sits on an axis: (0, 4) is on the y-axis and (6, 0) is on the x-axis
  • Compare matching terms: if each y is the same amount more, the rule adds; if each y is the same number of times as much, the rule multiplies

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, find how matching terms relate, form ordered pairs from them, and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.
  • 5.G.A.1 Know a coordinate grid is two perpendicular number lines meeting at the origin, and an ordered pair gives the distance along each axis.
  • 5.G.A.2 Graph points in the first quadrant to show real and math problems, and explain what the coordinates of each point mean in the situation.

Graphing on the Coordinate Plane

5th Grade

A 5-page coordinate plane pack for 5th grade. Name the origin, the x-axis, and the y-axis, read the ordered pair of each point, and plot and label points, including points on the axes. Plot the points of a mystery picture in order, make two number patterns from two rules and graph the pairs, and tell add rules from multiply rules. Find places on a town map and read a graph of a hike. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
