Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Read and plot ordered pairs, and tell which axis a point is on
  • Plot and join points, and find side lengths along grid lines
  • Read a map and tell what each coordinate means
  • Make two patterns from two rules, and graph the pairs of two patterns
  • The last four questions (input-output rules, adding or multiplying, patterns with decimals and fractions) are for the states that teach them
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • The axes, the origin and ordered pairs
  • Plot points from ordered pairs
  • Join points and find lengths along a grid line
  • Points on a map and what they mean
  • Two patterns from two rules
  • Graph the pairs of two patterns
  • Input-output rules as expressions
  • Adding or multiplying patterns
  • Patterns with fractions and decimals

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on the coordinate plane and patterns, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. Questions 7 to 10 are for the states that teach them, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. For each point, ask which number says how far across and which says how far up; for each table, ask how the numbers in a column are related. Leave out questions 7 to 10 if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to trace each move from the origin with a finger, and to test a rule on every column of a table.

Tips for Success

  • Start every point at the origin: across first, then up
  • Count units along a grid line, not the dots
  • Fill in a pattern table one column at a time
  • Test a rule on every pair of a table
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, find how matching terms relate, form ordered pairs from them, and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.
  • 5.G.A.1 Know a coordinate grid is two perpendicular number lines meeting at the origin, and an ordered pair gives the distance along each axis.
  • 5.G.A.2 Graph points in the first quadrant to show real and math problems, and explain what the coordinates of each point mean in the situation.

5th Grade Coordinate Plane and Patterns Unit Review

5th Grade

A review of the unit on the coordinate plane and number patterns, to go over together the day before the test. Students read and plot points, find lengths along grid lines, read a map, and make, compare and graph patterns from rules.
