Features

  • Two quick questions a ticket
  • An "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves
  • Read and plot ordered pairs on a coordinate grid, and tell which axis a point is on
  • Plot points, join them and find the length of a side along a grid line
  • Read places on a map and tell what each coordinate means
  • Make two patterns from two rules, compare their terms, fill in a table from two rules and graph its pairs
  • Tickets 14.7, 14.8 and 14.9 (input-output rules of one operation as expressions, adding or multiplying to get y from x, patterns with fractions and decimals) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade
  • Answer keys for every ticket

Skills Covered

  • The axes, the origin and ordered pairs
  • Plot points from ordered pairs
  • Join points and find lengths along a grid line
  • Points on a map and what they mean
  • Two patterns from two rules
  • Graph the pairs from two patterns
  • Input-output rules as expressions
  • Adding or multiplying patterns
  • Patterns with fractions and decimals

How to Use This Pack

Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on the coordinate plane and patterns, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, such as points to read or plot on a grid or a pattern to extend, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The grids are small, so have sharp pencils ready for plotting. Where a rule can be written more than one way, the key shows one way and says so. Tickets 14.7, 14.8 and 14.9 are for the states that teach those lessons in this unit; skip the ones your class does not learn. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing together. Ask your child to say how to plot a point aloud: start at the origin, go across first, then up.

Tips for Success

  • Say "across, then up" for every ordered pair
  • Have students trace each grid line with a finger before plotting
  • Count the units between points along a grid line, not the dots
  • Compare the terms in each column of a pattern table, not just the terms in a row
  • Test a rule on every pair of a table before using it

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, find how matching terms relate, form ordered pairs from them, and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.
  • 5.G.A.1 Know a coordinate grid is two perpendicular number lines meeting at the origin, and an ordered pair gives the distance along each axis.
  • 5.G.A.2 Graph points in the first quadrant to show real and math problems, and explain what the coordinates of each point mean in the situation.

5th Grade Coordinate Plane and Patterns Exit Tickets

5th Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a unit on the coordinate plane and number patterns. Students read and plot ordered pairs, join points and find lengths on a grid, read a map, make two patterns from two rules and graph their pairs.
