How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on the coordinate plane and patterns, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade and earlier skills the unit builds on: reading and marking numbers on a number line (a coordinate grid is two of them), the distance between two numbers on a line, counting on and back by a rule, the rule of an input-output table, "more than" and "times as many", and counting on by tenths. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misreads the number line needs that practice before the coordinate grid, and one who mixes up "more than" and "times as many" needs it before telling adding patterns from multiplying ones. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: count on and back by 6s and 7s together, and find numbers on a ruler or a number line.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Have students point to each tick as they count on a number line
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (24 = 3 × 8: 24 is 3 times as many as 8) and write comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, find how matching terms relate, form ordered pairs from them, and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.

5th Grade Coordinate Plane and Patterns Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on the coordinate plane and patterns, on the skills it builds on. Students read and mark numbers on a number line, find a distance on one, follow a counting rule, find the rule of a table, compare with "more than" and "times as many" and count by tenths.
