Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Write tenths strips, hundred grids and dimes and pennies as fractions and as decimals
  • Write tenths as hundredths, and add tenths and hundredths such as 7/10 + 3/100
  • Fill in a place value chart, write expanded form, and find 0.1 and 0.01 more or less
  • Name points on number lines in tenths and hundredths
  • Compare decimals with >, < and =, and put four decimals in order
  • The last three questions (halves, fourths and fifths as decimals, thousandths, and adding and subtracting decimals) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Tenths and hundredths as fractions and as decimals
  • Tenths as hundredths: 8/10 = 80/100
  • Add tenths and hundredths
  • Place value charts, expanded form and mixed numbers
  • 0.1 and 0.01 more or less
  • Decimals on number lines
  • Dimes and pennies as tenths and hundredths of a dollar

  • Halves, fourths and fifths as decimals, and benchmarks
  • Thousandths
  • Add and subtract decimals, money too

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on decimals. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 9 are the Common Core part of the unit; questions 10 to 12 (halves, fourths and fifths as decimals, thousandths, and adding and subtracting decimals) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Most questions have two or more parts: give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. Questions 10 to 12, at the bottom of the second page, are taught in 4th grade in some states only: give the ones your class learns and score out of what you give. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to read a price such as $3.47 as dollars, dimes and pennies, and to say which is more, 0.5 or 0.45, and why.

Tips for Success

  • Read decimals aloud as fractions: 0.38 is thirty-eight hundredths
  • Have students write a zero to compare tenths with hundredths: 0.6 is 0.60
  • Keep a hundred grid handy for the questions on tenths and hundredths
  • Count the steps between the marks on a number line before naming a point
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 4.NF.C.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths that refer to the same whole by thinking about their size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.

4th Grade Decimals Test

The unit test on decimals in two forms, from tenths and hundredths as fractions to comparing and ordering decimals. Students write shaded strips, grids and coins as decimals, add tenths and hundredths, use a place value chart and number lines, and compare and order decimals.
