Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Write strips, grids and coins as fractions and as decimals
  • Add tenths and hundredths, and write tenths as hundredths
  • Put a number in a place value chart and write it as a mixed number, and find 0.1 and 0.01 more or less
  • Mark decimals on number lines, then compare and order decimals
  • The last three questions (fractions as decimals, thousandths, adding and subtracting) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Tenths and hundredths as fractions and as decimals
  • Tenths as hundredths: 8/10 = 80/100
  • Add tenths and hundredths
  • Place value charts, expanded form and mixed numbers
  • 0.1 and 0.01 more or less
  • Decimals on number lines
  • Dimes and pennies as tenths and hundredths of a dollar
  • Compare and order decimals
  • Halves, fourths and fifths as decimals, and benchmarks
  • Thousandths
  • Add and subtract decimals, money too

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on decimals, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers; where the test names points on number lines, the review marks them, and where the test writes a mixed number in expanded form, the review goes the other way. Questions 1 to 9 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 10 to 12 (halves, fourths and fifths as decimals, thousandths, and adding and subtracting decimals) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Questions 10 to 12 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: leave out the ones your class does not learn. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to read each decimal aloud as a fraction (0.83 is eighty-three hundredths) and to say which of two decimals is more.

Tips for Success

  • Read decimals aloud as fractions before writing them
  • Write a zero to compare tenths with hundredths: 0.8 is 0.80
  • Count the steps from the left end of a number line before marking a point
  • Use dimes and pennies to show tenths and hundredths of a dollar
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 4.NF.C.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths that refer to the same whole by thinking about their size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.
