How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on decimals, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10 are for the states that teach fifths as decimals, thousandths and adding and subtracting decimals in 4th grade; skip them if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to read each decimal aloud as a fraction: 0.85 is eighty-five hundredths.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a hundred grid on the board for the tenths and hundredths tickets
  • Read decimals aloud as fractions before writing them
  • Have students write a zero to compare tenths with hundredths
  • Use real dimes and pennies for the money ticket
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 4.NF.C.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths that refer to the same whole by thinking about their size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.
