How to Use This Pack

Seven exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 4th grade unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. On ticket 7.1 any shading of the right number of parts is right. On tickets 7.4 to 7.6, listen for how students compared: renaming, one half, or the part missing from 1. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child which is more, 3/8 or 7/10, and how one half helps them tell.

Tips for Success

  • Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number
  • Line up fraction strips at the left edge before comparing
  • Check each fraction against one half first
  • Compare mixed numbers by their whole numbers first
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
