Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Shade a strip to show the same amount, and write two fractions for an area model
  • Circle the fractions equal to a given one, and write missing numbers
  • Find equal fractions on number lines past 1, and divide to find an equal fraction
  • Compare with a common denominator, a common numerator, one half or 1
  • Order fractions and mixed numbers, and a story about two pans the same size
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Equivalent fractions with fraction strips and area models
  • Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number
  • Equivalent fractions on number lines past 1
  • Divide to find an equal fraction
  • Compare with a common denominator
  • Compare with a common numerator
  • Compare with the benchmarks one half and 1
  • Order fractions and mixed numbers; the wholes must be the same size

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other fractions; where the test multiplies with the factor shown, the review circles the equal fractions and fills in missing numbers. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. On question 1 any 3 twelfths shaded are right; the key shows one way. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain how they know 2/5 = 4/10, then which is more, 2/5 or 1/4.

Tips for Success

  • Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number, never just one of them
  • To compare, rename one or both fractions to the same denominator, or to the same numerator
  • Check each fraction against one half first
  • Compare mixed numbers by their whole numbers first
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
