How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on measurement and conversions, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The rulers on ticket 11.9 are at real size, so print at 100%. Tickets 11.9 and 11.10 are for the states that teach them in 4th grade; skip them if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to say the fact behind each conversion, such as 1 yard = 36 inches, before working it out.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a chart of the conversion facts on the wall during the unit
  • Have students write the fact before they convert
  • Count whole hours first, then minutes, for elapsed time
  • Print the measuring ticket at 100% so the rulers measure true
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Solve story problems on distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money with any operation, simple fractions or decimals and unit changes, using number-line diagrams.
