Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Conversion tables for meters and centimeters, yards and inches, minutes and seconds
  • Change kilograms, liters, pounds and gallons to smaller units, and compare amounts
  • Elapsed time from two clocks, and a start time from an end time
  • A story on a number line diagram, a story with two units, and stories with fractions and decimals
  • The last two questions (measuring to the eighth inch and millimeter, choosing a unit and a tool) are for the states that teach them in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Metric length: kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters
  • Metric mass and liquid volume
  • Customary length: miles, yards, feet, inches
  • Customary weight and capacity
  • Hours, minutes and seconds
  • Elapsed time to the minute
  • Measurement stories in all four operations
  • Stories with fractions and decimals
  • Measure to the nearest eighth inch and millimeter
  • Choose a unit and a tool

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on measurement and conversions, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers and other units; where the test finds an end time, the review finds a start time. Questions 1 to 10 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 11 and 12 (measuring to the eighth inch and millimeter, and choosing a unit and a tool) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Print at 100% so the rulers on question 11 measure true. Questions 11 and 12 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: leave out the ones your class does not learn. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say the fact behind each conversion (1 yd = 36 in, 1 min = 60 s) before working it out.

Tips for Success

  • Write the fact at the top of each conversion table
  • Remind students that a bigger unit takes fewer of itself
  • Count whole hours first, then minutes, for elapsed time
  • Draw the jumps on the number line diagram before writing the answer
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Solve story problems on distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money with any operation, simple fractions or decimals and unit changes, using number-line diagrams.

4th Grade Measurement and Conversions Unit Review

A review of the unit on measurement and conversions, to go over together the day before the test. Students complete conversion tables, change and compare units, find elapsed time, and solve measurement stories with whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
