How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on money and financial literacy, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade money and financial literacy it builds on: counting bills and coins to $5, writing amounts with a $ sign, change from $5, adding and subtracting whole dollars, saving and giving, and borrowing with interest. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet count bills and coins to $5 or write $4.09 needs play money in hand before amounts to $20, and one who misses the change needs counting on from a price again before change from a $20 bill. Nothing on the page goes past $5 in coins and bills yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: count the money in a wallet together, and talk about how much of a gift of money to spend, save and give.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep play bills and coins out for a student who missed the counting
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

4th Grade Money and Financial Literacy Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on money and financial literacy, on the money skills it builds on. Students count bills and coins, write amounts with a $ sign, make change from $5, add and subtract dollars, and answer questions about saving, giving and borrowing.
