Features

  • Two quick questions a ticket
  • An "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves
  • Write equations with a letter for a strip diagram and a story
  • Solve a story in three steps, and estimate by rounding
  • Extend number patterns, tell odd from even, and write a rule

How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on multi-step problems, equations and patterns, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, such as an equation for a story, a pattern to extend or a table to complete, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The keys show one equation for each story or diagram; any equation that fits is right, and any letter will do. Tickets 6.3, 6.4, 6.7 and 6.8 are for the states that teach those lessons in this unit; skip the ones your class does not learn. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing together. Ask your child to say the rule of a pattern in words, then use it to find the next number.

Tips for Success

  • Say what the letter stands for before writing the equation
  • Each step of a story uses the answer of the step before
  • Round each number to estimate, then compare
  • Test a table's rule on every full column before using it
  • Check that every answer has its label

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number or shape pattern from a rule and notice features the rule does not say, such as terms switching between odd and even.
