Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Write an equation with a letter for a story shown in a strip diagram
  • Solve a story in three steps, and estimate to check an answer
  • Extend a number pattern from a rule and tell whether its numbers are odd, even or both
  • Fill in a pattern and write its rule, and draw the next step of a shape pattern
  • The last four questions (= and ≠, a letter in any place, input-output tables, rules by position) are for the states that teach them
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Two-step stories with a strip diagram and a letter
  • Multi-step stories with all four operations
  • Estimate to check an answer
  • Number patterns from a rule
  • What a rule does not say: odd and even
  • Shape patterns from a rule
  • True or false with = and ≠
  • A letter in any place of an equation
  • Input-output tables
  • Rules by position

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on multi-step problems, equations and patterns, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. Questions 7 to 10 are for the states that teach them, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. For each story, ask what the letter stands for and how an estimate would check the answer. Leave out questions 7 to 10 if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain each step of a story out loud, and to say the rule of a pattern before writing the next numbers.

Tips for Success

  • Say what the letter stands for before writing the equation
  • Each step of a story uses the answer of the step before
  • Check a pattern's rule on every pair of numbers, not just the first two
  • In an input-output table, test the rule on every full column
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number or shape pattern from a rule and notice features the rule does not say, such as terms switching between odd and even.

4th Grade Multi-Step Problems and Patterns Unit Review

A review of the unit on multi-step problems, equations and patterns, to go over together the day before the test. Students write equations for stories, solve and check multi-step stories, extend number and shape patterns, and find the rule of a table.
