How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on multi-step problems, equations and patterns, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the skills the unit builds on: the facts with all four operations, a missing number in a fact equation, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing larger numbers, counting on and back by a rule, and a two-step story inside 100. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who trips on the operations with larger numbers needs that practice beside the multi-step stories, and one who misses the missing numbers needs work on the link between adding and subtracting, and multiplying and dividing. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: count on and back by 6s, 7s and 25s together, and make up two-step stories from everyday shopping.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Ask students to say what the letter stands for in the story
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number or shape pattern from a rule and notice features the rule does not say, such as terms switching between odd and even.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method with regrouping.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, and two-digit by two-digit numbers, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 4.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, finding quotients and remainders with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.

4th Grade Multi-Step Problems and Patterns Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on multi-step problems, equations and patterns, on the skills it builds on. Students solve facts and missing numbers, add, subtract, multiply and divide larger numbers, follow a counting rule and solve a two-step story.
