Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000, and by multiples like 8 × 700 and 30 × 60
  • Fill in area models for 2-, 3- and 4-digit numbers times a 1-digit number
  • Multiply with the standard algorithm, by a 1-digit number and 2 digits by 2 digits
  • Fill in a four-part area model, then multiply with partial products
  • Round each factor to estimate, and decide whether an answer is reasonable
  • Solve an equal groups story and a times as many story with a letter for the unknown
  • The last question (3-digit times 2-digit) is for the states that teach it in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

The unit test for the fourth unit of 4th grade, multiplying multi-digit numbers. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Question 10 (3-digit times 2-digit) is for the states that teach it in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1, 4, 6 and 7 hold more than one problem: give the point when all are right, or score them by the problem if you like. The keys write one equation for each story; the factors may come in either order and any letter will do. Question 10 is taught in 4th grade in some states: leave it out if your class does not learn it and score out of 9. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to estimate first (round each number to its greatest place), then multiply and see whether the answer is close to the estimate.

Tips for Success

  • Think of 8 × 700 as 8 × 7 hundreds
  • In an area model, split each number by place value, then add the parts
  • Write the regrouped digits small, above the next place
  • Round each factor to its greatest place to check that a product makes sense
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.NBT.A.3 Multiply a single-digit number by a multiple of ten from 10 to 90, such as 4 × 70, using place value and properties.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, and two-digit by two-digit numbers, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.

4th Grade Multiplication Test

The unit test on multiplying multi-digit numbers in two forms, from multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 to 2-digit by 2-digit products. Students fill in area models, use partial products and the standard algorithm, estimate to check an answer and solve multiplication stories.
