How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on multiplying multi-digit numbers, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. Question 10 (3-digit times 2-digit) is for the states that teach it, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask students to estimate before they multiply, and to check their answer against the estimate. Leave out question 10 if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain each step of the standard algorithm out loud, and to estimate first so they know about how big the answer should be.

Tips for Success

  • Think of 3 × 900 as 3 × 9 hundreds
  • Split each number by place value in an area model, then add the parts
  • In the second row of 2-digit times 2-digit, you multiply by tens
  • Estimate first, then check the answer against the estimate
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.NBT.A.3 Multiply a single-digit number by a multiple of ten from 10 to 90, such as 4 × 70, using place value and properties.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, and two-digit by two-digit numbers, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.

4th Grade Multiplication Unit Review

A review of the unit on multiplying multi-digit numbers, to go over together the day before the test. Students multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000, fill in area models, use partial products and the standard algorithm, estimate to check and solve multiplication stories.
