Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Round to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, on a number line and in a table
  • Round to the nearest ten thousand and hundred thousand
  • Add and subtract five- and six-digit numbers, and subtract across zeros
  • Estimate sums and differences, and use an estimate to check an answer
  • A story with a strip diagram and an equation with a letter, and a two-step story
  • The last two questions (estimate or exact) are for Virginia, which teaches them in 4th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on rounding and on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 11 and 12 (estimate or exact) are for Virginia, which teaches them in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Most questions have two or three parts: give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. Questions 11 and 12 are for Virginia classes: leave them out elsewhere and score out of 10. On the story questions another equation can be right too (52,375 − 18,640 = b or 18,640 + b = 52,375); the keys show one way. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Round a price or a distance together, and ask whether an answer is close to what you would expect.

Tips for Success

  • Ask "which two thousands is it between?" before rounding
  • Have students line up the places before they add or subtract
  • Ask students to estimate before they work out the exact answer
  • Point to the letter in the strip diagram before writing the equation
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method with regrouping.

4th Grade Rounding, Adding and Subtracting Test

The unit test on rounding and on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, in two forms. Students round to any place, add and subtract with the standard algorithm, estimate to check answers, and solve one- and two-step story problems.
