How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on rounding and on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 2.8 is for Virginia classes; skip it elsewhere. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Round a price or a distance together, and ask whether an answer is close to what you would expect.

Tips for Success

  • Draw a number line on the board for the rounding tickets
  • Ask "which place am I rounding to?" before every rounding
  • Have students say where they regroup before they add or subtract
  • Ask students to estimate before they work out the exact answer
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method with regrouping.
