How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on rounding, adding and subtracting, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers, and some ask a little differently: the number line rounds to the nearest hundred, the subtraction across zeros adds to check, and the stories are a put-together story and a subtract-then-add story. Questions 1 to 10 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 11 and 12 (estimate or exact) are for Virginia. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Questions 11 and 12 are for Virginia classes: leave them out elsewhere. On the story questions another equation can be right too; the keys show one way. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to estimate first, then work out the exact answer and say whether the two are close.

Tips for Success

  • Have students say which place they are rounding to before they start
  • Ask "do you need to regroup?" place by place
  • Check a subtraction by adding the answer back
  • Find the letter in the strip diagram before writing the equation
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method with regrouping.
