Its six questions are on the 3rd grade work the unit builds on: rounding three-digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, adding and subtracting in columns within 1,000, estimating, and a one-step story problem. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet regroup with three digits needs base-ten blocks before five and six digits, and one who misses the rounding needs number lines before rounding to larger places. Nothing on the page goes past 1,000, so it shows what each student brings to the unit.
