Five pages that build fluency with the standard algorithm and show why it works. Page 1 adds by place value first (3,456 + 2,378 is 5,000 + 700 + 120 + 14), then adds nine 4- and 5-digit problems in a grid with place names over the columns and small boxes for the regrouped digits. Page 2 adds 6-digit numbers, one of them making exactly 1,000,000, writes two problems in the grid with the places lined up (one with three addends), and adds three numbers in an easier order: (2,375 + 625) + 4,980 = 3,000 + 4,980. Page 3 subtracts 4- to 6-digit numbers with regrouping, then counts up to subtract: 3,975 + 25 = 4,000 and 4,000 + 4,215 = 8,215, so 8,215 − 3,975 = 4,240. Page 4 subtracts across zeros (40,000 − 12,345), checks each answer by adding, finds the mistake in two worked problems and explains why adding checks a subtraction. Page 5 rounds to decide whether answers are reasonable, then solves four story problems with numbers up to 1,000,000, two of them multistep, estimating first.
Work the page 1 example together and point out that the 120 in the partial sums is the regrouped 1 in the hundreds place of the standard algorithm. Before page 4, model 40,000 − 12,345 with the regrouping written in: the 4 becomes 3 and every 0 becomes 9 except the ones, which becomes 10. The mistakes on page 4 make a good partner talk: ask each pair to agree on what went wrong before they write.
Look up big numbers together, such as the seats in two stadiums or the people in two towns, and ask your child to estimate the total and the difference before working them out. Check a subtraction by adding the answer back.

A 5-page addition and subtraction pack for 4th grade. Add by place value to see why the standard algorithm works, then add 4-, 5- and 6-digit numbers with sums up to 1,000,000, with small boxes for regrouped digits. Write problems in columns, add three numbers, and use the properties of addition to add in an easier order. Subtract with regrouping, count up to subtract, subtract across zeros and check each answer by adding, and find and fix mistakes. Round to decide whether answers are reasonable, then solve one-step and multistep story problems. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
