One page to give on the first day of the 5th grade unit on data and probability, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: a line plot in eighths from 4th grade, adding and subtracting mixed numbers with eighths, sharing a total equally, putting numbers in order, a bar graph that counts by 20s, and the outcomes of a spinner. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot subtract 1 6/8 from 3 1/8 needs mixed numbers again before solving problems with a line plot, one who misses the sharing story needs to add and then divide before the mean, and one who cannot put numbers in order needs that before the median. Nothing on the page asks for the mean, the median or a probability yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: measure a few pencils to the nearest eighth of an inch together, and share a handful of coins or crackers equally between family members.

A check to give before the unit on line plots, data and probability, on the graphs, fractions and number work it builds on. Students read a line plot in eighths, add and subtract mixed numbers, share a total equally, put numbers in order, read a scaled bar graph and list the outcomes of a spinner.
