Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Write the missing labels on a line plot in eighths and plot the lengths, then find the total, the equal share and the most minus the least
  • Pick the question that needs data and how to collect it
  • Find the mean, the median, mode and range, and choose the mean or the median for a typical value
  • Make a stem-and-leaf plot, a frequency table and a scatterplot, and read a line graph, a double bar graph, a histogram and a circle graph
  • Write probabilities from 0 to 1 as fractions, list the outcomes in a tree diagram and count outcomes by multiplying
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole 5th grade unit on data and probability, to do together the day before the test. Its 14 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other data. Questions 1 and 2 are the Common Core line plot lessons; questions 3 to 14 are for the states that teach them, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or the practice sheets. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. A class that follows the Common Core can stop after question 2; in other states, do the questions for the lessons your class was taught. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Put a handful of colored blocks in a bag, write the probability of picking each color, then pick and put back 20 times and talk about what happened.

Tips for Success

  • Write halves and quarters as eighths before plotting them
  • The mean is the fair share: add the data, then divide by how many
  • Put the data in order before finding the median
  • A probability is the parts that fit over all the parts
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators by rewriting them as equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
  • 5.NF.A.2 Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of one whole, unlike denominators included, and check that answers make sense with benchmark fractions and estimating.
  • 5.MD.B.2 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and solve problems from it with fraction operations, like sharing a total equally.

5th Grade Data and Probability Unit Review

5th Grade

A review of the unit on line plots in eighths, data and probability, to go over together the day before the test. Students make and use line plots, find the mean, median, mode and range, read and make tables and graphs of many kinds, and write probabilities and count outcomes.
