How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on data and probability, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: a line plot in quarters from 3rd grade, halves and quarters as eighths, adding and subtracting eighths, a bar graph that counts by 10s, tally marks, and the outcomes of a spinner. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot write 3/4 as eighths needs equal fractions on a ruler or a strip before line plots in eighths, and one who misses the bar graph needs to count by the scale again before graphs that count by halves. Nothing on the page is in eighths on a line plot yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: find the half, quarter and eighth marks on a ruler together, and count tally marks of things around the house.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • A ruler shows halves, quarters and eighths side by side
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.B.3 Make picture and bar graphs where each symbol or square stands for several items, and answer one- and two-step comparison questions from them.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.

4th Grade Data and Probability Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on line plots, data and probability, on the graphs and fractions it builds on. Students read a line plot in quarters, write halves and quarters as eighths, add and subtract eighths, read a scaled bar graph and tally marks, and list the outcomes of a spinner.
