Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Write the missing labels on a line plot from 0 to 1 in eighths, then plot the lengths
  • Add the lengths on a line plot, and find how much longer one is than another
  • Tally a survey of number answers into a frequency table
  • Make a stem-and-leaf plot and find its mode, median and range
  • Answer questions from a bar graph that counts by halves and from a line graph
  • List the outcomes of a spinner, say how likely an event is, and write probabilities from 0 to 1
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths
  • Add and subtract fractions using a line plot
  • Tally data into a frequency table
  • Make a stem-and-leaf plot
  • Find the mode, median and range
  • Read a bar graph whose scale counts by halves
  • Read a line graph and tell how the data changes
  • List the possible outcomes of a spinner
  • Say how likely an event is, from impossible to certain
  • Write a probability as a fraction from 0 to 1

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on data and probability, to do together the day before the test. Its 8 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other data. Questions 1 and 2 are the Common Core line plot lessons; questions 3 to 8 are for the states that teach them, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. A class that follows the Common Core can stop after question 2; in other states, do the questions your state teaches. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Make a spinner from a paper plate, spin it 20 times, tally the results and talk about which outcomes are likely and which are unlikely.

Tips for Success

  • Write halves and quarters as eighths before plotting them
  • Put the leaves of a stem-and-leaf plot in order from least to greatest
  • Look at what each grid line counts by before reading a graph
  • A probability is the parts that fit over all the parts
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.B.3 Make picture and bar graphs where each symbol or square stands for several items, and answer one- and two-step comparison questions from them.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.

4th Grade Data and Probability Unit Review

A review of the unit on line plots in eighths, data and probability, to go over together the day before the test. Students make and use line plots, tally a frequency table, make a stem-and-leaf plot, read bar and line graphs, and say how likely an event is, in words and as a fraction.
