Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Follow a pattern of zeros to divide by multiples of 10, and find a missing dividend or divisor
  • Estimate with compatible numbers, and decide whether an answer is reasonable
  • Divide with an area model and with partial quotients
  • Long division with 2-digit divisors: fix a tried digit, and write zeros in the quotient
  • Answer two questions on one remainder story, and solve a two-step division story
  • The last question (a remainder as a fraction or in dollars and cents, whichever fits) is for the states that teach it in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Divide by multiples of 10 with a fact
  • Estimate with compatible numbers
  • Divide with an area model
  • Partial quotients
  • Long division with 2-digit divisors
  • Fix a digit that is too big or too small
  • Five-digit dividends and zeros in the quotient
  • What the remainder means
  • Two-step division stories
  • A remainder as a fraction or a decimal (some states)

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on dividing whole numbers by 2-digit numbers, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. Question 12 (a remainder as a fraction or a decimal) is for the states that teach it, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask students to estimate each digit with the rounded divisor and to multiply back to check it. Leave out question 12 if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say each step of long division out loud: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.

Tips for Success

  • Use the basic fact, then count the zeros, to divide by multiples of 10
  • Round the divisor to the nearest ten to try each digit
  • If the digit is too big, the product is more than the part; if it is too small, what is left is a divisor or more
  • Decide whether the story needs one more group, drops the remainder or asks for it
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, finding quotients and remainders with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by two-digit numbers to find whole-number quotients, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.

5th Grade Dividing Whole Numbers Unit Review

5th Grade

A review of the unit on dividing whole numbers by 2-digit numbers, to go over together the day before the test. Students divide by multiples of 10, estimate, use area models, partial quotients and long division, and decide what a remainder means.
