How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on measurement conversions, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Where a key says so, an equal fraction or a decimal is right too. The rulers on ticket 10.8 are at real size, so print at 100%. Tickets 10.5, 10.7 and 10.8 are for the states that teach them in 5th grade; skip them if your class does not. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to say the fact behind each conversion, such as 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters, and whether the answer should be a bigger or a smaller number.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a chart of the conversion facts on the wall during the unit
  • Ask whether the new unit is bigger or smaller before multiplying or dividing
  • Use powers of ten for metric units: move each digit one place for each 10
  • Print the measuring ticket at 100% so the rulers measure true
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
  • 5.MD.A.1 Change measurements between bigger and smaller units of one system, such as 250 cm to 2.5 m, and use this in multi-step real-life problems.
