How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on measurement conversions, to do together the day before the test. Its 13 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers and other units; where the test has a liters table and compares kilograms, the review has a kilograms table and compares liters. Questions 1 to 10 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 11 to 13 (units of time and elapsed time, choosing a metric estimate and reading a beaker, and measuring to the nearest sixteenth inch and millimeter) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Print at 100% so the rulers on question 13 measure true. Questions 11 to 13 are taught in 5th grade in some states only: leave out the ones your class does not learn. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say the fact behind each conversion (1 lb = 16 oz, 1 mi = 1,760 yd) before working it out.

Tips for Success

  • Write the fact at the top of each conversion
  • Multiply to change to a smaller unit, divide to change to a bigger one
  • Write a fraction answer as a mixed number in simplest form, such as 15 in. = 1 1/4 ft
  • Change every amount in a story to the same unit first
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
  • 5.MD.A.1 Change measurements between bigger and smaller units of one system, such as 250 cm to 2.5 m, and use this in multi-step real-life problems.
