One page to give on the first day of the 5th grade unit on money and financial literacy, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade money and financial literacy it builds on: adding and subtracting dollars and cents, the pay for some hours at so much an hour, borrowing with interest, fixed and variable expenses, and an allowance plan. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot add or subtract dollars and cents needs that before totals with sales tax and running balances, one who misses the pay story needs to multiply by 2-digit numbers again before gross and net pay, and one who cannot finish the allowance plan needs it before balancing a budget. Nothing on the page asks about taxes yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: add up a store receipt together, and plan how a week of allowance could be split into spending, saving and sharing.

A check to give before the unit on taxes, income, ways to pay, records and budgets, on the money skills it builds on. Students add and subtract money, find pay for some hours, find the interest on a loan, tell fixed from variable expenses and finish an allowance plan.
